(Toronto) Civil society, non-governmental organisations, and scientists warn Nautilus shareholders not to pay the price of ignorance when it comes to investing in the Solwara 1 deep sea mining project in Papua New Guinea.

On 1st June 2015 Nautilus released an environmental and social benchmarking report on the proposed Solwara 1 mine in the Bismarck Sea of Papua New Guinea.

Canadian Mine Among Sites of Gross Human Rights Violations in Eritrea – UN Report

A new report by the UN Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in Eritrea describes “a totalitarian state bent on controlling Eritreans through a vast security apparatus that has penetrated all levels of society.” Nevsun’s Bisha gold-copper mine is repeatedly cited for appalling labour abuses by the company’s Eritrean contractors, including forced labour and inhuman living and working conditions.

Lac Des Iles tailings pond overflow raises concerns

An environmentalist from Thunder Bay says people should be concerned about the release of water from a tailings pond at the Lac Des Iles mine.

The mine announced last week it would dump water from a tailings pond, after failing to achieve what it calls "water balance."

The Ministry of the Environment says the release so far involves 120,000 cubic metres of water, with elevated levels of suspended solids, aluminum and iron.
