Iron ore and rare earths: Conference on human health and social licence for citizens of Sept-Îles and the Innu people

In response to an initiative by the Sept-Îles Citizens' Group, MiningWatch Canada and the Coalition Québec meilleure mine held an information evening on human health and social licence concerning critical minerals, particularly iron ore and rare earth elements. The evening aimed to provide the public with an independent overview of current and future mining development in the Sept-Îles region. 

Mexican Environmental Protection Office Closes “New Filos” Project

(Carrizalillo, Municipality of Eduardo Neri, Guerrero, México) Equinox Gold CEO Mr. Darren Hall’s celebration of the New Filos project did not last long. The project was inaugurated in the presence of representatives from the state of Guerrero, the municipality of Eduardo Neri and the communities of Mezcala and Xochipala on September 4, 2025. Since Wednesday afternoon, Equinox and its New Filos project face a new reality, having being closed by the federal government, specifically the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA).

SRRAC Submits Expert Evidence on Asbestos and Other Dust from Record Ridge Mine, Calls for Permitting Halt

ROSSLAND, B.C. — The Save Record Ridge Action Committee (SRRAC), a Rossland area community group, submitted additional expert evidence regarding the proposed Record Ridge mine to the B.C. government last week. The permitting process is now in its final stages, with a Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals (MCM) decision expected this month.

Between flaws, setbacks, and timid progress: Findings after 25 years of mining-related consultations

Over the course of 25 years accompanying mining-affected communities in Canada and globally, MiningWatch Canada has observed a pattern of rights violations in the ways governments and the mining industry purport to consult with those most affected. This article briefly outlines several conditions required to guarantee the rights of civil society to participate in meaningful consultation processes that are legal, dignified, effective, and predictable for all. Beyond these conditions, we underscore that the priority of governments must be on guaranteeing the rights of Indigenous Peoples to free, prior, and informed consent as enshrined in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples when it comes to mining projects in their territories.

International Allies against Mining in El Salvador Applauds Judicial Ruling That Finds All Five Water Defenders Innocent of All Charges

San Salvador – On September 24, the presiding tribunal in San Vicente, El Salvador found five prominent water defenders from Santa Marta, Miguel Ángel Gámez, Alejandro Laínez García, Pedro Antonio Rivas Laínez, Antonio Pacheco, and Saúl Agustín Rivas Ortega, innocent of charges of murder, kidnapping, and illicit association.
