First Nation, Citizens Oppose Pancontinental Resources’ Mining Project in Sensitive Watershed Area Near Bancroft, Ontario

(Toronto) The Chief of Alderville First Nation and over 250 people gathered last night at Pancontinental Resources’ (TSXV: PUC) community information meeting to oppose the McBride mining project in the Limerick and Crowe Valley Watershed areas in Hastings County, Ontario.

The current operator of the mine is Barrick (Niugini) Ltd, a subsidiary of the Canadian mining giant Barrick Gold. The mine has been in operation for well over 25 years by now.

Tanzania: Victims of North Mara Gold Mine Violence Find No Justice in New Compensation Scheme

(Ottawa) Grievous violence continues to be inflicted on local men and women by private mine security and police guarding Barrick Gold’s North Mara gold mine in northwestern Tanzania. There have been no criminal prosecutions, and the grievance process set up by the company to provide compensation to the victims is deeply inadequate, finds a new report.

Guatemala’s Highest Court Orders Tahoe’s Escobal Mine to Remain Suspended

(Guatemala/Ottawa/Washington, DC) Late Monday night, the Guatemalan Constitutional Court ruled that [US-Canadian owned] Tahoe Resources’ Escobal mine will remain suspended while the Ministry of Energy and Mines consults with the Xinka indigenous population in four municipalities, including San Rafael Las Flores, where the mine is located. This decision reaffirms a lower court decision from July 2017 to halt work at Escobal and the neighbouring Juan Bosco exploration licence over discrimination and failure to consult with Xinka people. The decision cannot be appealed.

Guatemalan Communities Deliver Message of Resistance to New CEO of Tahoe Resources

On Tuesday, members of the Peaceful Resistance of Santa Rosa, Jalapa and Jutiapa together with the Xinka People’s Parliament of Guatemala delivered the following letter to the attention of Tahoe Resources' new CEO, James Voorhees, and Executive Chair, Kevin McArthur. They call for an end to the environmental harms, community division, militarization and repression that the project has brought into their lives, and demand that Tahoe Resources permanently close the mine.
