Human Rights

Map: In the last few years, environmental defenders have organized to confront the social and environmental impacts of the mining industry. For their work protecting natural resources and the environment, environmental defenders have been subjected to human rights violations, which include threats, kidnappings, violent attacks and murder. The case studies examined in this report, and illustrated with this map, show that these instances are part of a growing trend in Mexico and Central America.

Communiqué: L’Association canadienne contre l’impunité (ACCI) s’est adressée aujourd’hui à la Cour suprême du Canada au nom de familles congolaises. Les familles veulent faire renverser une décision de la Cour d’appel du Québec qui a refusé d’entendre une cause portant sur les violations des droits humains perpétrées par la compagnie canadienne Anvil Mining Limited.

Communiqué: The Mexican Network of Mine Affected Communities – Chiapas echoes calls for an end to impunity in the case of Blackfire Exploration and for greater responsiveness from both Canadian and Chiapas authorities to requests for further information.

Letter: Two hundred and thirty three civil society groups from thirty countries, all organizations working for the protection of human rights and the environment in the Americas and Europe, jointly wrote the Inter-American Commission on Human Right (IACHR) to raise concern over recent decisions that reduce the effectiveness of its human rights protection mechanisms.
