Media Advisory: MiningWatch Canada’s Canada Program Coordinator, Ramsey Hart, will attend and speak at a consultation session with Quebec’s environmental review agency – the Bureau d’audiences publiques sur l’environnement (BAPE). The BAPE is undertaking a province-wide review of uranium exploration and extraction – a response to ongoing opposition to mining the radioactive mineral in the province.

News release: With the election of a new government in Quebec, the Coalition Quebec meilleure mine (Better Mining Coalition) invites Premier Phillippe Couillard and all the elected members of the National Assembly to pursue an agenda of reforms that will ensure that mining developments respect citizens, communities and the environment while ensuring a more equitable distribution of the collective wealth extracted from our non-renewable resources. The Coalition has identified five major themes for these reforms.

For the past two years MiningWatch Canada has been collaborating with Wolf Lake and Eagle Village Algonquin First Nations as they grapple with a proposed rare earths mine. Matamec Explorations Inc. is proposing the construction of a 4,200 tonne per day open pit rare earth mine in the traditional territory of the First Nations who are insisting the project undergo a joint Canada-Algonquin review panel.

(Kipawa, Quebec) Wolf Lake First Nation and Eagle Village First Nation are aware that the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) has initiated an environmental assessment of the proposed Kipawa Rare Earth Elements open pit mine. The proposed mine site is located within, and has the potential to significantly affect, the shared traditional territories of our two First Nations.

MiningWatch Canada is a founding member and supporter of the Coalition Québec meilleure mine (translated as the Better Mining Coalition with a clever pun – “mine’ also means face or apperance in French).  For over five years now the Coalition has been pushing an agenda of mining reforms in Quebec. Thanks to their hard work raising issues, building grassroots political support and putting forward coherent policy proposals  things are shifting dramatically in Quebec putting industry on the defensive. Unfortunately, as with many things, there has been little news of these developments in the media outside of Quebec.
