On May 2nd, 2007, as part of an "International Day of Action" against Barrick, protests took place in six different countries as well as in Toronto, Canada, where Barrick is based.

On the same day, Canada's second largest gold mining company, GoldCorp, was protested at their annual meeting in Vancouver.

The Canadian mining map was produced by the Halifax Initiative during the National Roundtables on Corporate Social Responsibility and the Canadian Extractive Industry in Developing Countries. The Roundtables, which took place between June and November of 2006, fulfilled one of the recommendations made in the groundbreaking report, Mining in Developing Countries and Corporate Social Responsibility, tabled by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade (SCFAIT) in June 2005.

The geochemistry of the Tapian ore body is such that acid drainage and metal leaching from exposed tailings, such as those in the causeway, must be expected. The sulphide mineral nature of the Tapian ore body, which is linked to acid drainage and metal leaching is well documented.

"The principal sulphide copper mineral is chalcopyrite. (...) Pyrite [iron sulphide] is intimately associated with the chalcopyrite..."

On October 20, 2005, MiningWatch Canada held a round table on "Regulating Canadian Mining Companies Operating Internationally" with industry, government, and civil society representatives, including invited guests from Latin America, Africa and Asia to examine options for regulatory and/or legislative change and debate the opportunities and difficulties of moving these options forward within the current Canadian political context.

We want Placer to take responsibility, clean up its waste and pay up what it owes,” says Oxfam’s Mining Ombudsman, Ingrid Macdonald.

Four years after a massive spill at Placer Dome's Marcopper mine put some 4 million tons of tailings into the 26-kilometre long Boac river on the island of Marinduque in the Philippines Placer Dome remains uncertain about when the cleanup will be completed and about what the final costs will be. The reason Placer Dome faces ever rising expenses and cannot finalize the cleanup of the Boac River is because the company refuses to respond to persistent opposition in the Philippines to the company's plan to place the spilled tailings in the sea.

Ottawa, February 17, 2000 — Placer Dome Inc. (PDI) has been presented with a shareholder proposal by Working Enterprises Ltd. (owned by seven major BC unions). WE Ltd. is asking PDI to provide independent public assessments of environmental risk at each of its operations and to disclose detailed information to shareholders about insurers and levels of insurance that the company has in place to protect shareholders from financial liability.
