'Kwale Dispatch’ was produced by ZAHRA MOLOO of CKUT Radio in Montreal, with translations from Kiswahili by Andrew Mwangura.  It features interviews taken in August 2005 with villagers of the affected areas of Maumba and Nguluku as well as representatives of the human rights organizations Muhuri, (Muslims for Human Rights), and the Coast Rights Forum.

On November 4-7, Joan Kuyek was in Kenya as a guest of Action Aid Kenya and the Coast Rights Forum. She made presentations on Canadian Mining Law and Regulation in Mombasa and in Nairobi, and visited with farmers in Kwale who are fighting their relocation to make room for a titanium mine owned by Tiomin Resources of Canada.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — 18 AUGUST, 2000

Tiomin Resources Inc., a Toronto-based mining company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, is expecting to strip-mine for titanium in the sands of Kenya's Kwale District starting early in the year 2001.

Titanium is used as a whitener for paint, plastic, and paper.

In spite of strong opposition from the public in Kenya, the Canadian High Commission has been promoting this project. The Kenyan government has indicated its support and is dismissing the public's complaints.

The Kenyan coast is a stunning tropical paradise, with its 250 miles of palm-fringed beaches, blue lagoons and magnificent coral beaches. Conservation International lists Kenya's coastal forest as one of the world's 25 "hotspots" — places of extraordinary biodiversity that are seriously threatened.

The fight to stop titanium mining on the Kenyan coast is gaining some ground in the courts. On February 27, the High Court sitting in Mombasa, Kenya, issued a temporary injunction stopping the titanium mining firm — Tiomin Resources Inc. — from mining or prospecting for the mineral at Msambweni.
