MiningWatch Canada is a pan-Canadian initiative supported by environmental, social justice, Aboriginal and labour organisations from across the country. It addresses the urgent need for a co-ordinated public interest response to the threats to public health, water and air quality, fish and wildlife habitat and community interests posed by irresponsible mineral policies and practices in Canada and around the world.

Membership in MiningWatch Canada is comprised of not-for-profit organisations working on environmental, social justice, international development and aboriginal issues. Member groups will serve as primary program and campaign partners and will assist in the development of strategy via input to the annual meeting. Membership applications are approved by the Board of MiningWatch Canada. Membership is not available to for-profit organisations or associations thereof.

The MiningWatch Canada national office staff consists of a Canada Program Coordinator, a Communications and Outreach Coordinator, a Research Coordinator, a Latin America Program Coordinator, and a Resource Development and Administrative Coordinator.

MiningWatch Canada is a federally registered non-profit society.

The Directors have expertise and experience in geoscience, human health, education, resource management, labour rights, organisational management and fund-raising, international development, and aboriginal issues. Individual board members are responsible to the member organisations of MiningWatch as a whole and will not, in their governance capacity, represent specific organisational interests.

Mining is an extremely high stakes game for public policy, finance markets and most importantly communities and ecosystems. While the industry emphasises its ability to generate wealth and its engineering prowess, its accountability for the massive accumulation of risks, costs and liabilities has not been addressed. The industry's domination of the public policy arena has prevented a serious challenge to the unsustainable status quo.
